West River Crossing

Antigonish,

nova scotia

Under sub-contract with Dexter Construction Company, MDL was tasked with the trenchless installation of a 200mm HDPE water main crossing under the West River, along Hwy 104 in Antigonish, NS. Limited geotechnical data indicated bedrock and the design specified the installation would be completed in rock to mitigate the risk for any accidental release of drilling fluids in the watercourse.

As part of the pre-construction submittal process, MDL provided the general contractor a comprehensive environmental plan with all the steps and equipment required to complete the crossing in the event there was a release of fluids.

Thermal plastic fusion services were completed ahead of the mobilization of the drilling equipment. Upon rigging up and commencing the pilot bore, a layer of course cobble stone was identified above the bedrock formation. Utilizing our air hammer, we elected to drive a 16” steel casing to bed rock, casing the unconsolidated cobble stone and ensuring the integrity of the borehole.

The borehole was pre-reamed to 12” & the 88m crossing was successfully completed March 19th, 2020.
